At Durham Gilesgate, we have a pupil parliament, who were elected by their peers to help us to collect the ideas of all the children in school, ensuring that their voices and opinions are heard. Through our pupil leadership team, we strive to create confident and articulate leaders who feel empowered to help make decisions that will have a positive impact on the school and their community.
We are extremely proud of our children and in the academic year 2021-22 we were able to make the following changes and introduce fun activities from the children’s amazing suggestions.
We listened to their ideas and listed below all the exciting things we have done!
Easter Egg Trail with prizes.
Easter Egg competition – Judged by representatives from Chapter Homes in Gilesgate
New play equipment – coming soon
Playing on the field again
Jubilee Picnic – we celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June by enjoying a whole school picnic.
Fish as well as Fish fingers on Fridays
More outdoor seating on our yard
Reintroduction of Pen Licences – Achieved in Y6!
Our Pupil Parliament and Headteacher Mr Turner met with our Local MP for Durham Mary Kelly Foy to discuss our together board which highlights how our fantastic school welcomes all children.

Mary Kelly Foy MP – Friday 13th May 2022
What a fabulous visit to Gilesgate Primary School this afternoon to meet with the Pupil Parliament. They had all sorts of questions for me from my favourite author, what I worked as before I was an MP, how busy I am and even if I’m richer than the Queen – the answer was obviously no!
Mr Turner kindly showed me the wonderful collage children in the school had made in support of all children in countries affected by conflict and told me about the money they’d raised for Save the Children. He also showed me their award winning allotment which the children, staff and local families enjoy tending to. I can’t wait to see it in full bloom and I’m hoping to go and pick a bag of goodies when the fruit and vegetables are in season.
You can feel the love in Gilesgate Primary and the staff just adore the children – the feeling was clearly mutual from what I saw. I’m looking forward to keeping in touch with Mr Turner and his brilliant team so we can work together closely in the future.
